Racks, rigs and Smith machines

A rack is the centre of most strength home gyms: it catches the bar when a squat or press goes wrong and holds the attachments you add later. These guides compare power racks, squat stands, folding and wall-mounted racks and Smith machines on what matters at home: height, footprint, stability and what fits on them.

What to look for

The four things that separate a good buy from a return.

  1. Ceiling height

Check the rack’s listed height against your ceiling, minus flooring, and leave room for pull-ups and overhead presses.

  2. Footprint and depth

Deeper racks give more room inside the cage; shallow and folding racks save floor space in one-car garages.

  3. Uprights and hole spacing

Upright size and hole pattern decide which attachments fit, so match them before you buy add-ons.

  4. Safeties and anchoring

Look at how spotter arms or straps catch a missed rep, and whether the rack needs bolting down.
