The short answer
The best rubber gym flooring roll for most home gyms is the Greatmats Geneva 3/8-inch black roll at $2.21 per sq ft. It has a 5-year warranty, a low-odor formula, and it can be dry-laid in rooms under 400 sq ft. On a tight budget, FlooringInc's 3/8-inch Heavy Duty roll starts at $1.58 per sq ft. For dropped barbells, step up to 1/2 inch.

1Best overall
Greatmats Geneva 3/8 inch black rubber roll
A 4-ft-wide, 3/8-inch rubber roll cut to your length, made in the USA. It is dense enough for racks, dumbbells and cardio machines. Greatmats says small home gyms can lay it loose, with no glue.
Why it ranks here: It has the most complete spec sheet of any 3/8-inch roll we found: Shore A 62 hardness, 2.10 lb per sq ft, a 5-year warranty, a stated low-odor formula and dry-lay approval under 400 sq ft, all at $2.21 per sq ft. FlooringInc is cheaper, but it lists no hardness figure and says the roll can smell.

- Someone sleeps or works near the gym and odor matters

2Best budget 3/8-inch roll
FlooringInc 3/8 inch Heavy Duty Rubber Rolls
A made-in-USA 3/8-inch roll sold by the linear foot with a 15-ft minimum. The lowest price is for the Confetti Regrind color, which ships from the warehouse nearest you. FlooringInc gives step-by-step tape and glue instructions on the product page.
Why it ranks here: At $1.58 per sq ft it was the lowest 3/8-inch price we read, and it carries a 5-year warranty. It ranks below Greatmats because that price is for one color, no hardness figure is listed, and the maker says the roll can smell at first.

3Best for thickness and color choice
American Floor Mats Rubber Roll Matting
A 4-ft-wide roll cut to any length, made in the USA from recycled tires. The maker says home gyms can loose-lay it with no glue, and you can request a free sample. Listed prices are marked approximate.
Why it ranks here: It offers 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch in solid black and several color-fleck levels, with 3/8-inch black at about $2.09 per sq ft. It ranks third because the roll page gives no warranty length or hardness figure, and freight is quoted after you order.

4Best for short runs under 25 ft
Greatmats Rolled Rubber Sport 3/8 inch black
A dense 3/8-inch roll sold by the foot, often used in commercial weight rooms. It is a good fit for a single 4-ft-wide strip under a rack or bench. Plan on double-sided tape or adhesive.
Why it ranks here: It matches the Geneva roll on price ($2.19 vs $2.21 per sq ft), weight and warranty, and its 15-ft minimum suits small rooms. It ranks below the Geneva because Greatmats says it must be taped or glued, not dry-laid.

5Best for dropped barbells
Greatmats Geneva 1/2 inch black rubber roll
The same Geneva roll in 1/2 inch, which Greatmats says Olympic lifting centers use. It weighs about 43% more per sq ft than the 3/8-inch version (our calculation). Choose it for a lifting area where bumper plates hit the floor often.
Why it ranks here: It is the thickest roll here with a full spec sheet: 3.00 lb per sq ft, Shore A 62 and a 5-year warranty at $2.93 per sq ft. It ranks fifth only because most home gyms do not need the extra thickness or cost.
| Thickness | 1/2 in |

REP Fitness Commercial Flooring Rolls
Big 4 x 25 ft rolls in 8, 9 or 12 mm, made from recycled rubber with a polyurethane binder. REP says 9 mm handles dropped bumper plates and 12 mm handles bumpers and iron plates. Rolls ship by freight with curbside delivery.
Why it ranks here: It is the only roll here with shipping built into the price, plus a 5-year warranty and a stated low odor. It ranks seventh because one 9 mm roll works out to $8.25 per sq ft (our calculation), and the price only drops to $3.33 at six rolls.

8Best under cardio machines
Greatmats Geneva 1/4 inch black rubber roll
A thin, lighter roll at 1.50 lb per sq ft for treadmills, bikes, rowers and floor work. It protects the subfloor and cuts noise but is not meant for heavy drops. Greatmats warns the smell can last several days.
Why it ranks here: At $1.50 per sq ft it is the cheapest roll here with a 5-year warranty and a stated hardness (Shore A 62). It ranks eighth because 1/4 inch is too thin for dropped weights and Greatmats says it must be taped or glued.

Rubber-Cal Elephant Bark 3/8 inch roll
A 3/8-inch recycled rubber roll sold as a 4 x 50 ft full roll or cut to any length up to 50 ft in half-foot steps. Rubber-Cal says its own weight keeps it flat, with tape at the edges to stop trips. Color-dot options add cost.
Why it ranks here: It ships within 24 hours and its EPDM content makes it suitable outdoors, with a 60 Shore A hardness listed. It ranks last because a full 4 x 50 ft roll works out to $5.25 per sq ft (our calculation) and the warranty is 3 years, not 5.

What is the best rubber gym flooring roll for a home gym?
Our pick for most home gyms is the Greatmats Geneva 3/8-inch black roll at $2.21 per sq ft, because it pairs a full spec sheet with a 5-year warranty and a low-odor formula. For most people, 3/8 inch is the right thickness. It is thick enough for a power rack, dumbbells and a treadmill, and it still cuts cleanly with a utility knife.
If price per sq ft is all that matters, FlooringInc’s 3/8-inch Heavy Duty roll starts at $1.58 per sq ft in its Confetti Regrind color. If you drop loaded barbells from overhead, go to 1/2 inch; the Greatmats Geneva 1/2-inch roll costs $2.93 per sq ft. If you want one delivered price with no freight quote, REP’s Commercial Flooring Rolls include shipping but cost more unless you buy several rolls.
Rolls are one of three common formats for home gym floors. For the full range of options, see our guide to the best gym flooring for a home gym or browse the flooring hub.
How we ranked these rubber flooring rolls
We compared these rolls from maker spec sheets, listed prices, warranty terms and the owner feedback we could read on product pages. We did not test them. Every number on this page comes from a maker or seller page we read on September 23, 2026, and our method is explained on how we research.
We started with more than a dozen rolls from maker sites and specialist flooring stores, then scored each one on five things:
- Thickness and material (25%). Is it a real gym thickness (3/8 inch or more for free weights), and does the maker say what it is made of?
- Price per sq ft (25%). We used the listed price and did the math for whole-roll pricing. Delivery is extra for most of these rolls, so we flagged freight where the seller mentions it.
- Durability, density and warranty (20%). We looked for a hardness figure, a weight per sq ft and a written warranty. A missing figure scored lower; we did not guess.
- Install ease and coverage format (15%). Minimum lengths, whether the roll can be laid loose, and pre-cut sizes.
- Odor and owner-reported issues (15%). What the maker admits about smell, and what owners wrote on the product page.
A few things we could not verify. American Floor Mats does not list a warranty length or hardness on its roll page. FlooringInc lists a starting price for one color, not every color. Freight costs depend on your ZIP code, so we could not compare delivered prices except for REP, which includes shipping.
Left out: the Greatmats 1/4-inch 4 x 10 ft roll that many buying guides still recommend is now marked discontinued. We could not load Rogue’s flooring page to check its current roll options, so it is not ranked.
How do the picks compare on thickness, weight and price?
Price per sq ft ranges from $1.50 to $9.00 across our picks, but most 3/8-inch rolls sit between about $2.09 and $2.21. The table below uses listed prices from September 23, 2026. Prices change often, and freight is extra unless noted.
| Roll | Thickness (in) | Weight (lb per sq ft) | Price (per sq ft) | Minimum length or size | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Greatmats Geneva 3/8 | 3/8 | 2.10 | $2.21 | 25 ft; 100 sq ft order | 5 yr limited |
| FlooringInc Heavy Duty 3/8 | 3/8 | about 2.2 (8.8 lb per linear ft) | from $1.58 | 15 ft | 5 yr |
| American Floor Mats 3/8 black | 3/8 | about 2 | about $2.09 | any length | not stated |
| Greatmats Sport 3/8 | 3/8 | 2.00 | $2.19 | 15 ft | 5 yr limited |
| Greatmats Geneva 1/2 | 1/2 | 3.00 | $2.93 | 25 ft; 100 sq ft order | 5 yr limited |
| Elite Floor Supply 3/8 black | 3/8 | about 3 (maker figure) | $2.18 | 4 x 10 ft pre-cut | 5 yr |
| REP Commercial 9 mm, 1 roll | about 3/8 (9 mm) | 2.0 (200 lb per 100 sq ft) | $8.25, shipping included | 4 x 25 ft roll | 5 yr |
| Greatmats Geneva 1/4 | 1/4 | 1.50 | $1.50 | 25 ft; 100 sq ft order | 5 yr limited |
| Rubber-Cal Elephant Bark 3/8 | 3/8 | 2.00 | $5.25 full roll; $7.13 custom | any length to 50 ft | 3 yr limited |
The FlooringInc weight and every REP and Rubber-Cal price per sq ft are our calculations from the maker’s listed figures. REP’s price per sq ft falls to $3.33 when you buy six 9 mm rolls, because its volume pricing is steep.
Hardness is listed as Shore A on several pages. Shore A (durometer) is a hardness score for rubber; higher numbers are firmer. The Geneva rolls list Shore A 62 and the Sport and Rubber-Cal rolls list 60, so they are close.
How much does a roll of rubber gym flooring weigh?
A 4 x 10 ft roll of 3/8-inch rubber weighs about 80 to 120 lb, and a 4 x 25 ft roll weighs about 200 lb. Rubber-Cal says 10 ft of its 3/8-inch roll weighs about 80 lb. FlooringInc puts a 4 x 10 ft roll at about 100 lb, and REP lists its 4 x 25 ft rolls at 200 lb.
This table is our calculation. It multiplies roll area by the weights Greatmats lists for each thickness. Other brands run a little lighter or heavier.
| Roll size (ft) | Coverage (sq ft) | 1/4 in at 1.50 lb/sq ft (lb) | 8 mm at 1.70 lb/sq ft (lb) | 3/8 in at 2.10 lb/sq ft (lb) | 1/2 in at 3.00 lb/sq ft (lb) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 x 10 | 40 | 60 | 68 | 84 | 120 |
| 4 x 15 | 60 | 90 | 102 | 126 | 180 |
| 4 x 25 | 100 | 150 | 170 | 210 | 300 |
| 4 x 50 | 200 | 300 | 340 | 420 | 600 |
Two lessons come out of this. First, a 4 x 50 ft roll of 3/8 inch is too heavy to carry down basement stairs, so ask the seller to cut your order into shorter rolls. Second, the delivery driver usually leaves the pallet at the curb. REP’s rolls ship by freight with curbside delivery, and REP suggests at least two people to move them.
How many rolls do I need for my room?
Divide your room’s width by 4 ft and round up; that is how many strips you need. Each strip runs the full length of the room. Then add up the strip lengths to get total linear feet, and multiply by 4 to get the square feet you are buying.
This table is our calculation for 3/8-inch rolls. It uses Greatmats Geneva at $2.21 per sq ft and American Floor Mats at about $2.09 per sq ft, before freight and tax.
| Room (ft) | Strips (4 ft wide) | Total length (ft) | Area ordered (sq ft) | Weight at 2.10 lb/sq ft (lb) | Cost at $2.21 (Geneva) | Cost at $2.09 (AFM) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 x 10 | 3 (trim 2 ft off one) | 30 | 120 | 252 | $265.20 | $250.80 |
| 12 x 12 | 3 | 36 | 144 | 302 | $318.24 | $300.96 |
| 10 x 20 or 12 x 20 | 3 | 60 | 240 | 504 | $530.40 | $501.60 |
| 16 x 20 | 4 | 80 | 320 | 672 | $707.20 | $668.80 |
| 20 x 20 (two-car garage) | 5 | 100 | 400 | 840 | $884.00 | $836.00 |
A few tips help you avoid waste:
- Run strips the long way. Fewer, longer strips mean fewer end seams.
- Order one long run and cut it yourself. The Geneva roll has a 25-ft minimum per roll. For a 12 x 12 room, order one 36-ft roll and cut three 12-ft strips on site.
- Watch pre-cut sizes. With REP’s 4 x 25 ft rolls, a 20 x 20 room needs five rolls, because each roll gives one 20-ft strip plus a 5-ft offcut. Five 9 mm rolls cost $1,799.99 with shipping, or about $4.50 per sq ft of room covered (our calculation).
- Add a little. Rooms are rarely square. Measure both walls and use the longer number.
For a full budget that includes adhesive, tape and delivery, see our breakdown of gym flooring installation cost.
What thickness of rubber roll do I need: 1/4, 3/8 or 1/2 inch?
For most home gyms, 3/8 inch is the best thickness, since it handles racks, dumbbells and cardio machines. FlooringInc calls 3/8 inch “the most common thickness found in commercial gyms.” Go thinner only for cardio and floor work, and go thicker only for frequent heavy drops.
Here is how makers describe each thickness:
- 1/4 inch (about 6 mm). Good under treadmills, bikes and rowers. It is lighter and cheaper, but it is not meant for dropped weights.
- 8 mm (about 5/16 inch). FlooringInc recommends 8 mm “for most home gyms where no heavy weight is being dropped.” REP says the same about its 8 mm roll.
- 3/8 inch (about 9 to 9.5 mm). The all-round choice. REP says its 9 mm roll is for people “who may just be dropping bumper plates.”
- 1/2 inch (about 12 mm). FlooringInc calls it typical for Olympic lifting. REP says 12 mm can take both bumper and iron plates.
Thickness is not the only factor. A dedicated lifting platform spreads the load far better than any roll. If you drop heavy deadlifts, a platform on top of 3/8-inch rubber is often a better plan than 1/2-inch rubber alone. Our guide on how thick gym flooring should be covers this in more depth.
Are rubber rolls better than interlocking tiles or stall mats?
Rolls are the best choice for large, rectangular rooms, because they cover the most area with the fewest seams. Tiles are easier in small or odd-shaped rooms. American Floor Mats says the two use “the exact same” material and warranty in its line, and that its rolls are usually a little cheaper than its tiles.
| Format | Typical size | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rolls | 4 ft wide, cut to length | Big rectangular rooms, fewest seams | Heavy, freight delivery, hard to move later |
| Interlocking tiles | about 2 x 2 ft | Small or odd-shaped rooms, rentals | More seams; pieces can shift |
| Stall-style mats | about 4 x 6 ft slabs | Small zones under a rack or platform | Heavy slabs and more seams per room |
If your room has lots of corners, posts or a door in the middle of a wall, compare the best interlocking gym flooring tiles first. Tiles are also easier to take with you when you move.
Should you glue, tape or loose-lay rubber rolls?
Most home gyms can loose-lay 3/8-inch rolls or use double-sided tape at the seams and edges. Glue is for big rooms, commercial use and places where equipment gets dragged. Greatmats says the Geneva roll can be dry-laid in rooms under 400 sq ft. American Floor Mats says its rolls can be laid loose in homes “regardless of the intensity of the workouts.”
Not every roll allows it, though. Greatmats says its Sport roll and its 1/4-inch Geneva roll must be taped or glued down. Thin rubber can creep and curl at the edges more easily.
FlooringInc’s install steps are a good model:
- Clean and dry the subfloor.
- Lay the rolls out loose and let them relax for 24 to 48 hours.
- Cut to fit with a straight edge and a fresh utility blade. Leave a gap at the walls about as wide as the roll is thick, so the rubber can expand.
- For tape, roll each strip back and tape along its edges. For glue, spread adhesive about 10 ft at a time, unroll into it, then press it down with a 100-lb roller.
Check the subfloor first. Greatmats says cracks or dips deeper than 3/16 inch should be repaired before a glued install. If your garage slab slopes or has high spots, read our guide on how to level a garage floor for a gym before you order.
How do you cut rubber flooring rolls?
Use a sharp utility knife and a straight edge, and make several passes instead of one hard cut. American Floor Mats says to score the line first, then cut deeper with steady pressure. Dipping the blade in soapy water helps it glide.
Do not use a power saw. American Floor Mats warns that a saw is “too fast and dangerous” and can ruin a straight edge. Cut on a scrap board, keep your free hand behind the blade, and change blades often, because rubber dulls them fast.
Do rubber flooring rolls smell, and how long does it last?
Most recycled rubber rolls smell at first, and the smell usually fades over days to weeks with airflow and cleaning. Greatmats says its 1/4-inch Geneva roll has “a noticeable rubber smell that may last for several days after installation.” FlooringInc says its 3/8-inch roll can have “a slight odor” and that you may need to mop several times to remove it.
Some makers claim less smell. Greatmats says its Geneva 3/8-inch roll has a low-odor formula. REP says its rolls have “a very low, minimal odor.” American Floor Mats says its rolls “will not off-gas.” These are maker claims; we could not measure them.
To cut the smell faster:
- Unroll the rubber in a garage or shed for a few days before you bring it inside. Greatmats suggests this for its 8 mm Sport roll.
- Mop with mild soap or a neutral pH cleaner and water, and let it air dry.
- Run a fan and open windows for the first week.
If someone in your home is sensitive to smells, choose a roll the maker sells as low-odor, and ask for a sample first. American Floor Mats offers a free sample.
What should you check before you order rubber rolls?
Check the delivered price, the lead time and the minimum order before you pay. Rubber rolls are heavy, so shipping often changes the real price more than the list price does.
- Freight. FlooringInc says cross-country freight can add $50 to $200 to an order, and colors from a far warehouse add about $0.35 to $0.50 per sq ft. American Floor Mats sends a freight quote for approval before shipping.
- Lead time. Elite Floor Supply lists 10 to 15 days to produce an order. REP lists one to two weeks plus about a week in transit. FlooringInc showed a ship window of September 30 to October 7 when we checked. Rubber-Cal says its Elephant Bark rolls generally ship within 24 hours.
- Minimums. Greatmats’ Geneva rolls need 100 sq ft per order and 25 ft per roll. Its Sport roll and FlooringInc need 15 ft.
- Piece count. Greatmats notes that a cut length may arrive in two pieces, which adds a seam.
- Returns. Many cut-to-length rolls are custom orders. Ask about returns before you order.
Owner feedback shows why this matters. On Elite Floor Supply’s page, one owner, Kathleen Cox, says an extra shipping invoice arrived after she ordered, which the company later honored at the original price, and her rolls arrived about a month after ordering. On REP’s page, owners Nicole R. and Matthew S. both say solid black shows dust and dirt, and that fleck colors hide it better.
Who should buy something other than our top pick?
Our #1 pick is not right for everyone. Pick a different roll if one of these fits you:
- You need under 100 sq ft. The Geneva roll has a 100 sq ft minimum. The Greatmats Sport roll or FlooringInc’s roll, both with 15-ft minimums, suit a single strip under a rack.
- You want the lowest price. FlooringInc’s 3/8-inch roll beats our #1 by $0.63 per sq ft if the Confetti Regrind color works for you.
- You drop heavy barbells often. The Geneva 1/2-inch roll, or a platform on top of 3/8-inch rubber.
- You cover a large garage. For 500 sq ft or more, price REP’s six-roll bundle. Its $3.33 per sq ft with shipping may beat a lower list price once freight is added.
- You are renting. Tiles or a few stall mats are easier to remove. See our picks for the best garage gym flooring.
Safety notes before you install
Rubber rolls are heavy and awkward. Move them with at least two people and a hand truck, lift with your legs, and keep your back straight. Never try to carry a 4 x 50 ft roll alone.
Tape or bevel the edges where the floor meets a walkway so no one trips on them. Rubber-Cal suggests double-sided carpet tape at edges and entry points for this reason. If your gym sits over a floor drain, a heated floor or a damaged slab, check with a licensed contractor before you cover it. Keep the floor clean and dry to avoid slips; our guide on how to clean gym floor mats covers safe cleaners.
A good roll floor protects the slab and cuts noise. It does not make heavy lifting safe on its own. Use collars, and use a rack or platform with safety arms for heavy barbell work; our guide to the best power racks covers those options.
Questions
How wide are rubber gym flooring rolls?
Almost every rubber gym roll we checked is 4 ft wide, and you choose the length. Greatmats says all of its rolled rubber comes in 4-ft widths. That means a room is covered in 4-ft strips, with a seam every 4 ft.
Can you put rubber flooring rolls over carpet?
Most makers say no, or only over thin commercial carpet. Greatmats says its rolls must go on a hard, flat surface, and REP says its rolls are not suited to carpet, wood or tile. FlooringInc says low-pile carpet works but thick carpet can let the seams separate.
Is rolled rubber cheaper than horse stall mats?
It depends on the seller, so compare the price per sq ft. Stall-style mats come as heavy 4 x 6 ft slabs, so a room ends up with more seams. Rolls cover a room in long 4-ft strips with fewer seams, which looks cleaner and gives fewer edges to trip on.
How long does it take to install rubber gym rolls?
A small room can go down in an afternoon with two people, plus 24 to 48 hours of relaxing time first. FlooringInc says to let rolls relax that long before cutting. Glued installs take longer because you spread adhesive and unroll 10 ft at a time.
How do you clean rubber gym flooring rolls?
Sweep or vacuum, then damp-mop with a mild or neutral pH cleaner and let it air dry. FlooringInc warns against solvent or oil-based cleaners such as Pine-Sol, Lysol or WD-40. Do not leave the floor soaking wet.
Can rubber rolls go in a garage that gets cold?
Yes, but expect some movement. American Floor Mats says rubber can expand a little in heat and shrink a little in cold, so gluing helps if temperatures swing a lot. Leaving a small gap at the walls also helps.
Do rubber flooring rolls come in colors?
Yes. Most sellers offer solid black plus color flecks, often 10%, 20% or more of the mix. Color adds cost; at American Floor Mats, 3/8-inch rolls run about $2.09 per sq ft in black and $2.21 with 10% color. REP owners say fleck colors hide dust better than solid black.
