How much does a garage gym conversion cost?

A garage gym conversion costs about $1,760 for a basic do-it-yourself build, $4,100 to $4,800 for a mid-range build, and $9,000 to $28,500 for a finished, insulated, climate-controlled gym (our calculation). The gap between tiers comes less from the barbell and more from what you do to the building: wiring, insulation and cooling.

Every product price below came from the maker’s or seller’s own store on September 23, 2026. Contractor costs come from published cost guides (Angi and HomeGuide), and we name which one each time. Prices change often, and sale prices can end any day, so treat these as a snapshot, not a quote.

This page is a planning guide in our home gym planning section. It does not rank products. The items in each tier are examples chosen because their prices were public and current, so you can see real numbers add up.

What are the three garage gym budget tiers?

The three tiers are a DIY starter gym, a mid-range gym with one electrical upgrade, and a finished gym with insulation and a mini-split. Here is how they compare before you read the line items.

Tier Equipment and supplies ($) Contractor work ($) Total ($, our calculation) Who it fits
Budget DIY 1,761.25 0 1,761.25 Mild climate, one bay, plug-in everything
Mid-range 3,833.44 280 to 980 4,113.44 to 4,813.44 Cold winters, wants a mirror and more plates
Finished 7,088.59 1,945 to 21,400 9,033.59 to 28,488.59 Hot or cold climate, trains year-round

The finished tier has the widest range because contractor quotes swing with garage size, insulation type and how far the electrician has to run wire. Get at least two local quotes before you trust any number in that column.

What does a budget garage gym cost, line by line?

A budget garage gym costs about $1,761 with no contractor work (our calculation). It covers a rack, bar, 160 lb of bumper plates, a flat bench, a 60 sq ft rubber floor, plug-in light, a small heater, a fan and a door insulation kit.

Total Prices checked September 23, 2026 1,761.25

A few notes on these picks. The Titan roll works out to about $5.00 per sq ft (our calculation from $299.97 for 60 sq ft), and Titan lists it at 100 lb, so plan on two people to carry it. The Mr. Heater Buddy runs on a standard 120V outlet, heats up to 170 sq ft according to Mr. Heater, and has a tip-over switch and overheat protection.

The Reach Barrier kit contains eight pre-cut panels of about 24 x 48 in. That is roughly 64 sq ft of material (our calculation), which may cover a single-car door. Reach Barrier does not state which door size one kit covers, so measure your door panels before you buy.

What this tier skips: a mirror, any wiring, and wall or ceiling insulation. If your garage already has a working outlet and overhead light, you can train in it the day the gear arrives. For more layout ideas at this price, see our garage gym ideas.

What does a mid-range garage gym cost?

A mid-range garage gym costs about $4,113 to $4,813 (our calculation). It adds a heavier rack, a better bar, 230 lb of plates, an adjustable bench, 120 sq ft of stall mats, a 240V heater with its own circuit, and a full-length mirror.

Total Our calculation 4,113.44 to 4,813.44

The heater is why this tier needs an electrician. Mr. Heater says the 3.6 kW model needs a “240V 15 amp double pole breaker,” puts out 12,283 BTU and is sized for 307 sq ft. A BTU (British thermal unit) is a unit of heat; more BTU means more heating power. Most garages do not have a spare 240V outlet, so budget for the circuit.

HomeGuide lists a dedicated circuit at $250 to $900 installed and electrician labor at $50 to $130 per hour. Angi’s figure for a simple 240V outlet is lower, $175 to $300 with a $220 average, which fits a short run close to the panel. If your panel is full, HomeGuide puts a panel upgrade at $1,300 to $4,000 and a subpanel at $500 to $1,700, which would push this tier higher. Hire a licensed electrician and follow local code; this is not a DIY job.

The stall mats cost about $4.83 per sq ft in the 10-pack (our calculation from $579.99 for ten 12 sq ft mats). REP lists them at 3/8 in thick and 22 lb each, thinner than the 3/4 in stall mats many lifters use under heavy deadlifts. Our guide to the best garage gym flooring covers thickness trade-offs, and how to level a garage floor helps if your slab slopes toward the door.

The Dulles Glass mirror is 1/4 in thick and uses laminated glass that Dulles describes as shatter-resistant. The kit includes clips, two tubes of mirror adhesive and a J-bar. Compare wall mirror options in our garage gym mirror guide.

What does a finished garage gym conversion cost?

A finished garage gym conversion costs about $9,034 to $28,489 (our calculation). About $7,089 of that is equipment and supplies. The rest is insulation, a mini-split for heating and cooling, a dedicated circuit, and permits.

Insulation is the step that makes the rest of the money work. Angi notes that mini-split costs rise when a garage lacks insulation or needs electrical work. HomeGuide puts insulating an unfinished 2-car garage at $800 to $5,100 and insulating plus drywalling it at $1,800 to $9,000. Angi’s average for garage insulation projects is $4,700, with a common range of $1,900 to $7,700.

Angi gives $500 to $14,500 as the total project range for a garage mini-split, with a $3,500 average, and labels $2,000 to $9,200 as labor. Angi says that total depends on whether the garage also needs wiring and insulation, so the top of our range may count some of that work twice. For the mini-split, Angi’s sizing table suggests about 9,000 BTU for a two-car garage of 360 sq ft and 18,000 BTU for a three-car garage of 704 sq ft. Angi also estimates a 9,000 BTU unit adds around $5 to $36 a month to your power bill at eight hours a day. A licensed HVAC installer should size the unit for your climate and your insulation level.

Two ways to cut this tier: skip drywall and leave insulation covered only where you need it, or replace the mini-split with a 240V heater from the mid tier if summers are mild. Our guide on how to heat a garage gym walks through heater types.

How does a folding rack change the cost if you still park in the garage?

A folding rack costs more than a basic rack but lets you keep a car bay. The PRx Profile CORE was $799.99 at PRx Performance, about $420 more than the REP PR-1100 in our budget tier (our calculation).

PRx lists the CORE with 89 in tall, 11-gauge 3 x 3 in uprights, a 1,000 lb capacity, and wall brackets for 16 in or 24 in stud spacing. PRx recommends a 107 in ceiling and says the rack can fit ceilings down to 94 in with a modified install. It mounts to the wall, so it depends on solid studs and correct install.

If you share the garage with a car, plan the gym around one bay. Our half garage gym ideas show layouts, and our list of the best power racks compares free-standing options if you have the floor space.

Which conversion costs are easy to miss?

The costs people miss most are wiring, permits, freight and the second round of flooring. Each can add hundreds of dollars.

Hidden cost Typical range ($) Source
240V outlet, simple install 175 to 300 Angi
Dedicated circuit, installed 250 to 900 HomeGuide
Panel upgrade 1,300 to 4,000 HomeGuide
Subpanel 500 to 1,700 HomeGuide
Electrical permit, one outlet 30 to 80 HomeGuide
Insulation permit 75 to 700 Angi
Drywall install, per sq ft 1.50 to 3.50 Angi
Garage heater, installed 1,500 to 4,000 Angi

Shipping is the other wild card. Some stores list free shipping on certain items, and REP offers local pickup discounts at its Moreno Valley, California, and Carlisle, Pennsylvania locations. Heavy items such as plates and mats can carry freight fees elsewhere, so check the cart total, not the list price.

Also check your floor before you buy mats. A cracked or sloped slab may need repair first, and Angi lists garage floor repair at $100 to $500.

How did we build these budgets?

We built these budgets from public store prices and published cost guides; we did not test any product or hire any contractor. Each product was picked because its price and key specs were shown on the maker’s or seller’s own site on September 23, 2026, and the product was listed as available.

Contractor numbers are the published ranges from Angi and HomeGuide, not quotes. Every total is our own arithmetic from those figures. Read more about how we research.

What we could not verify: exact freight charges to your ZIP code, whether any listed sale will still be running when you read this, and how much your local electrician or HVAC installer will charge. Local quotes will always beat a national range.

Is a garage gym makeover worth the money?

A garage gym makeover is worth it if you will train at home for years, because equipment keeps most of its use value while a membership does not. If you are unsure, start with the budget tier and upgrade the building later.

Here is a simple way to decide which tier fits you:

  • Start with the budget tier if your garage stays above freezing, you already have an outlet and a light, and you mainly squat, bench and deadlift.
  • Choose the mid tier if winters are cold enough that a 1,500 W plug-in heater cannot keep up, or you want more plates and an adjustable bench.
  • Choose the finished tier if you train in hot summers or hard winters, or the garage will also serve as a year-round workspace.

Where the budget tier beats the finished one: it is ready in a weekend, needs no permits in most cases, and you can resell nearly every piece if you move. Where it falls short: comfort in extreme weather and room for dumbbells and cable work.

What safety steps belong in a garage gym budget?

Set aside money and time for safety before extras. Anchor or set up your rack exactly as the maker’s manual says, use safety arms or straps when you lift alone, and keep a clear zone around the bar.

For heat, follow the heater manual on clearance from walls, gear and anything flammable, and keep cords out of walkways. Gas or propane heaters, new circuits and mini-splits should be installed by licensed pros who know your local code. A carbon monoxide alarm is a cheap add-on if any fuel-burning appliance shares the space.

For lifting itself, build up weight slowly and learn good form first. If you have a health condition, talk with your doctor before you start a new training plan.

Questions

Is it cheaper to build a garage gym or keep a gym membership?

It depends on your membership price and how long you train at home. Our budget build totals about $1,760 in equipment and upgrades, so divide that by your monthly membership fee to see how many months it takes to break even. Used gear shortens that timeline.

Do I need a permit to turn my garage into a gym?

Moving equipment into a garage usually does not change the building, but adding a circuit, insulation or a mini-split often does. Angi lists insulation permits at $75 to $700 and HomeGuide lists electrical permits at $30 to $80 for one outlet. Call your local building department before you start.

Can I still park a car in a garage gym?

Yes, if you plan the gym around one bay. A wall-mounted folding rack, such as the PRx Profile CORE, folds against the wall so a car can pull back in. Rolling storage and a flat bench that hangs on the wall also help.

How much does it cost to heat a garage gym?

Plug-in electric heaters cost the least up front: the Mr. Heater 1500W Buddy was $86.35 when we checked and is rated for up to 170 sq ft. Angi puts installed garage heaters at $1,500 to $4,000, with an average of $2,075. Insulating the space first helps any heater work better.

What is the most expensive part of a garage gym conversion?

In a basic build, equipment is the largest cost, and the rack, bar and plates take most of it. In a finished build, climate control and insulation can cost more than all the equipment combined. Angi's average mini-split install is $3,500, and HomeGuide puts insulating a 2-car garage at $800 to $5,100.

How much flooring do I need for a garage gym?

Cover at least the area around your rack and where you deadlift. Our budget tier uses one 60 sq ft rubber roll, and the mid tier uses 120 sq ft of stall mats. Measure your rack footprint plus a few feet on each side before you order.

Is a garage gym worth it in a hot or cold climate?

It can be, but budget for climate control from the start. A fan and a small heater cover mild weather for under $200 in our budget tier. Hot summers or freezing winters may call for insulation and a mini-split, which moves you into the finished tier.
